ABOUT THE SNAKE

The Snake, like its fellow creature the Rat, has generally had a bad press as far as humanity is concerned. Fortunately those inscrutable observers of nature, the Chinese magicians and astrologers of old, were not subject to the prejudices that have prevailed in other cultures. They saw much to admire in the reclusive snake, and also realised how much it had in common with certain astrological types.

On the whole snakes are reserved creatures, even retiring in some cases, and so it is with Snake people; for despite a veneer of sociability, refinement and glamour, the Serpent individual is basically a one-off and a loner. This type can spend long hours simply curled up with a good book or laid in the sunshine, travels around slowly, if at all, and takes great delight in the known rather than the new and sensational. Despite its reserved demeanour the Snake is no ascetic however, refusing to deny itself the finer things of life. This is why the serpent is invariably immaculately dressed, loves good food and drink, has a strong sexual drive and is fastidious about cleanliness.

All sensual motivations are important to the Snake, most of whom are also cultured to a greater extent than their peers. At a social function the snake will be the elegantly dressed individual, sampling the finest wines and cheeses, keen to indulge in polite social discourse, yet displaying an amiable intrigue that is almost hypnotic. Snake people are warm by nature and can make good friends, even if there is a part of them that few people ever get to know. They make extremely bad enemies because, as with the creature whose name they share, they are apt to strike when you would least expect them to do so.

They are astute when it comes to looking after what they consider to be their own interests and are not inclined to pry into the lives of others. Despite this the Snake always seems to know what is going on and is not easily hoodwinked. There are many aspects to the Snake person that are inclined to be both misunderstood, and on many occasions the Snake itself is willing to actively support the situation. The reason is simple; what could be better than to keep everyone guessing? All inhabitants of the zoo would do well to look carefully towards the Reptile House and beware: it is very easy to underestimate the Snake!
