The Pig has gained itself a rather problematic reputation, the more so in its domestic state. However, this is a very different creature from the animal that the ancient Chinese were familiar with, and it is within the realms of the present day Pig's wilder ancestors that we find the best similarities with the zodiac Pig person.

Pigs are basically shy creatures in the wild, they have to be, because they are vulnerable to attack arid make a tasty snack for any would be predator. Not that they are defenseless, as many an unwary hunter discovered to his cost, for although often willing to stay in the undergrowth, all Pigs, animal and human, can fight ferociously if they have to do so, and in the case of the human variety at least, rarely lose a battle once they are committed.

This is probably the most underestimated of all the Chinese signs, and also one of the most difficult to understand. The Pig is full of apparent paradoxes, it is shy and demure, though powerful and tenacious; it may hide in a corner when unexpected company is about, and yet is primed to act quickly and with frightening certainty when it proves necessary to do so.

Pigs are usually kind by disposition, though do have the reputation for being a little dark and mysterious. They are highly charged sensually and can love to the point of excluding all other considerations from their minds. They relish being at home and want to make the most of family life, in which they find the greatest happiness of all.

Pigs work hard, both on their own account and for any enterprise or charity that they really believe in. Many people think that they can detect a certain vulnerability, or even a gullible streak, in the Pigs basic nature. This may be true, but exploit it at your own peril. If you think in terms of some overfed porker, lounging lazily in a sty and waiting for the butcher to arrive, then think again. The Pig type is intelligent, can struggle long and hard in order to achieve its objectives, responds well to love and attention and is, in every way, a unique individual. Looks, not to mention first impressions, can be very deceptive, and especially so in this case. The Pig is probably the kindest, though potentially the most dangerous animal in the whole menagerie.
